I LOVE AVOCADO! It could be my California roots, but I’m inclined to blame my Mexican-food-loving Mama for this one.

Growing up, my mom put avocado in just about every meal she cooked. Sure, we ate Mexican food more than anything else, so the abundance of avocado is sort of explained. Yet, even when she wasn’t cooking Mexican meals, avocado found its way onto my plate. She was putting avocado in salads long before Panera made it popular.

My boys have inherited a love for avocado as well. It was the first “food” I gave each of them. We skipped right over the rice cereal that’s recommended as a “first food” and introduced avocado. It was a huge hit with all three.

I truly believe avocado is under appreciated as a first food. Avocado is packed with nutrients, it doesn’t have to be cooked, and it purees to a beautiful texture. Perfect for baby.

Avocado is one of the few foods I recommend introducing in its most natural form. No additives are needed to make it delicious. Although, once baby hits six months, go ahead and throw some onion and cilantro in the mix…get those little foodie taste buds ready for Taco Tuesdays!

AVOCADO PUREE (4+ MONTHS)

  • 4 ripe avocados
  • Breast milk, formula, or water (as needed)

Puree avocado in the food processor until smooth.

If needed, add breast milk, formula, or water 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.

LITTLE FOODIE GUAC. (6+ MONTH)

  • 4 ripe avocados
  • ¼ cup sweet onion
  • 2 Tbsp cilantro

Puree the onion and cilantro in the food processor until very smooth. Add avocado and puree until desired consistency is reached.

The natural liquid from the onion should be enough to keep create a nice consistency. If more liquid is needed, add breast milk, formula, or water a tablespoon at a time.
